Being prepared for a child custody hearing is one of the most important things that the parent seeking custody can do. This has nothing to do with how to conduct yourself in the courtroom. Instead it is the ability to demonstrate to the court that you are the best choice. There are several simple things one can do to improve their position.
First, know your child. I have had several clients that did not know the correct date of birth for the child. They did not know the name of the child’s teacher, school counselor, principal or if they are younger daycare worker, and owner operator. I also recommend that you are familiar with all of the extracurricular activities that your child is involved. Being familiar with the above will accomplish three things; it will demonstrate to the judge that you are involved in your child's life and are concerned about what your child is doing, it will limit the cross examination by your wife’s attorney, and it will get you involved in your child’s life and that is always a good thing.

Part two will be posted Monday.

The above is the opinion of the writer and not offered as a legal opinion.
