Previously, I wrote an article about some general life changes or considerations, you may need to make in anticipation of a child custody hearing. Some of these suggestions would be good to follow even if you were not anticipating a dispute for child custody. I am going to start by reiterating some of the things I touched on last time. Overall, it is important that you live your life everyday such that it is in your child’s best interests to be with you not your spouse.

Because so much is at stake for you, your children and your spouse, keeping records of your positive interactions with your children is important. To document the positive items, you may want to consider doing the following:

• Attend church with your child; such things can show you are interested in the moral development of your child.

• Document the activities you do with each child on a daily basis, such things give a picture of how involved you are in the child’s life.

• If you can, be the one take your children to their doctor or dentist appointments. This shows that you are there to nurture the child and also, creates a chance for others to see the positive effect you have in your child’s life.

• If you, take your children on vacations or “quality time” outings, take pictures; again, they can help show the positive effect you have in your child’s life.

• Keep the record of school activities, sports activities, PTO meetings you attend for your child. If you are out supporting your child in these activities, you never know who you may see or who may see you supporting your child; such things could give people in the community a favorable impression of your relationship with your child. Keeping ticket stubs, and recording these activities could help show you are very involved in your child’s life.

There is no magic formula for showing that child’s best interests would be served by ultimately being with you. However, consistently, and positively interacting in your child’s life can go a long way in these custody disputes.
