Another House Bill was introduced recently that pushes to allow for the the cramdown of mortgages in a Chapter 13 plan. H.R. 4173 would grant bankruptcy judges power to modify or cramdown the terms of existing mortgages. Earlier this year, a bill was introduced that would have allowed for the cramdown of mortgages, but it was overcome through the urging of lenders. This bill will certainly draw the same amount of opposition from lenders because it would drastically affect how secured they are on the loan; however for consumers, it would allow for better debt control under plans.
